Overview:

A.H. Beck Foundation Company recently completed the deep foundation construction for The Mather project located in McLean Virginia. Working as a subcontractor for The Whiting & Turner Contracting Company, we installed piles for three different buildings (19 story tower, 27 story tower and a parking garage). The work consisted of constructing 720 18-in diameter auger cat piles to depths of 40 to 87 feet terminating in weathered rock. In conjunction with project requirements, three compression load tests were completed and assisted the Geotechnical Engineers in finalizing design depths while dealing with a quite variable geotechnical weathered rock profile.

Unique drilling methods were implemented because the footprint of each Tower was so tight and at three different elevations with the deepest approximately 25 feet below grade. We elected to service the drilling in the Cellars from up top to eliminate 2 cranes in the same excavation. Additionally to help the schedule, we were able to drill a number of piles from outside the excavation through the ramp which saved the time and expense from having to flip the ramp.
