US-231 Highway suffered a slope failure/slide, A.H. Beck developed a solution to install drilled shafts to support the bridge working around the clock in Huntsville, Alabama

Overview:

The US-231 Highway is a major connector coming into Huntsville, AL and suffered a slope failure/slide the took out a large section of highway. Brasfield and Gorrie teamed up with A H Beck Foundation to develop a state-of-the-art and unique approach to install the large diameter drilled shafts needed to support a bridge which replaces the at-grade highway. The 32 Р108ӯ drilled shafts, socketed 14 feet into the solid limestone formation were installed ahead of schedule working around the clock to expedite the work. The engineer used a unique design to reinforce the drilled shafts for the high lateral loads by utilizing steel pipe in the shaft, replacing the conventional reinforcing steel cage.
