A.H. Beck is contracted to install surface casings on the Lake Mead Intake Low Level Pumping Station along with North American Drillers on Lake Mead in Nevada
A.H. Beck Foundation Co., Inc. was contracted to and worked closely with North American Drillers to install surface casings on the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 Low Level Pumping Station. These surface casings were going to be used to start and center up the drill string for the excavation of the final pump shafts being installed by NAD. Keeping the excavations perfectly straight in the hard sloping rock found at the site and an aggressive schedule were the main challenges faced by Beck. A.H. Beck excavated thirty-four (34) twelve foot (12’) diameter shafts approximately 35’ below the existing working grade. The work location was cut into the side of a hill which exposed the 30,000 psi metamorphic rock that was present from the top of the excavation to the bottom. AHB used a combination of twenty-four inch (24”) down-hole hammers and conventional high torque crane attached drilling equipment with rock tools to complete the excavations. Once the excavation was complete, eight foot (8’) diameter surface casing where set, centered and then the annulus was grouted up to existing grade.
