A.H. Beck installs 176 drilled shafts with lengths of up to 96 feet for a retaining wall in a new 28 story office building in Downtown Houston, Texas.

Overview:

A.H. Beck installed 176 drilled shafts as part of a retaining wall for the new 28 story office building, “1550 on the Green . Close coordination and planning with the owner, contractor and utility companies was required as the project consisted of several challenges including limited access, very tight congested area with multiple other crafts, existing hotel and active roadways on edge of construction area and an existing live 10-in. gas line within 2.5-ft of the edge of half the shafts.  The project consisted of drilled shafts that were 30, 36, and 42 inches in diameter, and varied in length from 40 to 96 feet. In order to maintain hole stability, these shafts were installed using short temporary casings, and bentonite slurry. A.H. Beck mobilized two drill rigs, and a 110-ton crawler crane in order to pick and set the 96-foot rebar cages that were within feet of the existing hotel.
